The Profitable Writer Podcast is Back!
Jul 04, 2025
First things first: Happy July 4th! I’ve decided to relaunch the show today since it’s a day of freedom, independence, and celebration. All those ideals are absolutely fitting for the key idea of this show, which is helping YOU gain freedom and independence as a writer by building a business with your creativity. And when you do, it’s a major cause for celebration!
I’m honored that you’ve chosen to spend your time with me today, wherever you’re listening.
If you have listened to this show before, you have probably noticed that it’s been quite a while since I’ve released a new episode—about 8 months, in fact. The purpose of this episode today is to share why there has been a big gap between episodes, and to give you a heads up about the show moving forward.
First, let’s talk about why it’s been so long since I’ve released a new episode.
I’m a big fan of just being honest and not sugar-coating things. Maybe that comes from my blue-collar roots growing up in southern Missouri, where we truly live by our identity as the “Show-Me State.” After all, Missouri is a place where people are straightforward, hardworking, and don’t put up with a lot of fluff and nonsense.
With that in mind, here’s what happened. It has been a very bizarre and unprecedented string of events. Last Fall, my son was dealing with some major health issues. So in order to give my family the attention it deserved, I put the podcast and some other things in my business on hold, except for the essentials of running my Profitable Writer membership community and doing ghostwriting for clients.
We got him taken care of, and then I came down with Covid in early December. Mind you, I’d never had Covid before, surprisingly, and I was not prepared for the havoc it would wreak on my body. I know everyone has a different experience with physical illness, and that’s certainly true of Covid. Some people get over it quickly, and others have lingering symptoms and issues.
Unfortunately, I was in the latter category. It’s no exaggeration to say I have never been more sick in my life. On top of that, my whole family came down with a severe case of the flu in late January. This year it was unusually potent in our area, and I had the pleasure of having my flu turn into pneumonia, on top of lingering issues from Covid.
The short story is that through getting healthier, scaling back my business as much as possible while I recovered, and some help from doctors, of course, I was able to recover. But the first few months of this year were the most challenging time I have faced in many years.
There are probably some lessons from this experience that I'll be unpacking for a while, but one of the main ones is the value of resilience. When life throws you a curve ball and things get out of whack, you can throw in the towel and quiet ... or you can get up and continue the good work you were doing.
Although it's been a while since I've released new episodes, I'm honestly more excited than ever about The Profitable Writer. If life has thrown you some curve balls lately, I also want to encourage YOU to get back on the horse and start doing what you love again.
Now, the ironic part about all of this is that I still continued to record podcast interviews, which I thoroughly enjoy doing. As a result, I have a stash of interviews in the can that I’m excited to share with you over the next couple of months.
Which brings me to this: during the months of July and August, we’re celebrating our Summer Expert Series. During these two months, I’ll share three interviews per week. We’ll have guests talking about ghostwriting, fiction, book marketing, audiobooks, collaboration, leadership, and much more.
Then on Labor Day, we will shift two episodes per week, which will feature a teaching episode on Mondays and an interview on Thursdays.
I truly can’t tell you how excited I am to bring you these new episodes and share some cool upcoming projects with you. Although the last few months have been, shall we say, interesting, I’ve also been hard at work, as I’ve been able, creating some exciting things to share with you over the next few months.
We’ll start our Summer Expert Series this coming Monday with my guest, Dennis Pullin, CEO of Virtua Health in New Jersey. He’ll be talking about business leadership and writing lessons from his new book, Suited for Leadership, which was a collaboration.
As always, thank you SO MUCH for your continued support. Keep on writing!
